Žuvintas Lake – important dwelling location for migratory geese Žuvintas Biosphere Reserve is one of the richest biological diversity territories in Lithuania, distinguished for its notably valuable and unique natural complexes. The rare, endangered plant and animal species (inter alia, species of international importance) as well as vestigial communities and habitats of wetlands flourish in the territory of Žuvintas nature reserve.

Butterfly Swallowtail There have been registered up to date altogether 3787 mushrooms, plants and animals species, from which: 292 – mushrooms species, 987 – algae, mosses and higher plant species. Animal kingdom consists of: 2199 invertebrates, 21 fishes, 10 amphibian species, 5 reptiles, 230 birds, and 43 mammals’ species.

Solid-tubered concaveCorydalis cava (L.)Žuvintas Reserve has a been a shelter for 119 mushrooms, plants and animals species listed in the Lithuanian Red data book, 4 of them – under the strict protection. Territory of the biosphere reserve has been nominated the Natura 2000 site, where 12 migratory bird species from the EU Birds directive have status of special protection, together with dwelling locations for the migratory water birds, 6 plants and animal’s species plus 16 habitats types from the EU Habitats Directive.
